Engage individually at one of our Hospital-Based Programs

RNHC

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are spaces inside the hospital that offer respite and refreshment to the families of hospitalized pediatric patients.

In-hospital volunteer opportunities give you the chance to serve families with tangible support right where they are. Volunteers serve as hosts, offer comfort to families, and keep snacks, beverages, and other amenities stocked and ready for guests. These simple acts of kindness can be just the care families need to make it through a long day in the hospital.

Family Room volunteering requires that you become a registered volunteer with the hospital and Ronald McDonald House. It is a long-term opportunity with a weekly commitment.

The UNC Family Room serves as a home-like place of respite within the hospital for the families of inpatient pediatric patients. Parents or primary caregivers can rest, get coffee, eat light meals and snacks and take a deep breath while only steps away from their child’s hospital bedside.

The role of the volunteer is to serve as host, be supportive, and maintain a friendly and caring atmosphere. Tasks include greeting visitors as they come in, sharing information about the room, providing a listening ear, ensuring the space is kept tidy and clean, restocking supplies, and more. Friendly, compassionate, and adaptable adult volunteers are scheduled once a week for a three-hour shift.

Family Room volunteers:

  • Are age 20 or older
  • Commit to a regular weekly shift for a minimum of 6 months
  • Comply with all UNC Hospital volunteer requirements
